November 24, 2011 06:20 PM PST
In 1789, following a proclamation issued by President George Washington, America celebrated its first Day of Thanksgiving to God under its new constitution. That same year, the Protestant Episcopal Church, of which President Washington was a member, announced that the first Thursday in November would become its regular day for giving thanks, “unless another day be appointed by the civil authorities.” Yet, despite these early national proclamations, official Thanksgiving observances usually occurred only at the State level. Much of the credit for the adoption of a later ANNUAL national Thanksgiving Day may be attributed to Mrs. Sarah Joseph Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. For thirty years, she promoted the idea of a national Thanksgiving Day, contacting President after President until President Abraham Lincoln responded in 1863 by setting aside the last Thursday of November as a national Day of Thanksgiving. Over the next seventy-five years, Presidents followed Lincoln’s precedent, annually declaring a national Thanksgiving Day. Then, in 1941, Congress permanently established the fourth Thursday of each November as a national holiday.
When I left Springfield [to assume the Presidency], I asked the people to pray for me. I was not a Christian. When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ. Proclamation of Thanksgiving BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theater of military conflict; while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battlefield; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed, Done at the city of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth ABRAHAM LINCOLN

WELCOME TO ANOTHER EXPANDED EDITION OF THE WEEKLY RADIO BROADCAST “OPA FROM GREECE WITH LOVE” ALWAYS HEARD LIVE FROM THE FILM CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA AT THE FAMED SUNSET BLVD STUDIOS OF THE AMERICAN RADIO NETWORK’S KCLA-FM STATION AT 99.3 ON YOUR DIAL SATURDAYS AT 12 NOON PDT. WE ALSO SIMULCAST ON KCLAFM.COM AND TUNEIN.COM, AND SUNDAYS AT 6PM EST ON RADIONEO.US. WE BRING YOU A VERY SPECIAL PROGRAM UNLIKE ANY YOU HAVE HEARD. SIR RON GOODWIN, POSSIBLY THE GREATEST ORCHESTRATOR OF HIS DAY TEAMED UP BACK IN THE EARLY 60’S WITH THE FAMED LEBANESE COMPOSERS, THE RHABANI BROTHERS, WHO HELPED PIONEER THE MARRIAGE OF THE INTRICATE ARABESQUE MONOPHONIC RHYTHMIC SIGNATURE TECHNIQUE OF THEIR PEOPLE WITH THE LYRICAL POLYPHONIC MINOR SCALE MELODIC STYLE OF THE WEST THAT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF TWO OTHER SUCCESSFUL MUSICIANS FROM OUR COMMUNITY, MIKIS THEODRAKIS AND MANOS HADJIDAKIS WHO IN THEIR OWN UNIQUE MUSICAL STYLES, EFFECTIVELY COMBINED TRADITIONAL MONOPHONIC RYTHMIC PATTERNS WITH THE HARMONY OF THE POLYPHONIC WESTERN MINOR KEYS AND THEIR SYNCOPATED COUNTERPOINT, THUS CREATING A BODY OF WORK THAT REMAINS TO THIS DAY A CASE STUDY OF CRAFTSMENSHIP AND ARTISTRY AT ITS FINEST. I CHOSE SIR RON GOODWIN’S ARRANGEMENTS OF THE RHABANI CLASSICS BECAUSE THEY ARE INSTRUMENTALS. YES THE MUSIC HAS LYRICS BUT THEY ARE ALL SUNG IN THE ARABIC/LEBANESE DIALECT. THE GREEKS AND THE PEOPLE OF THE LEVANT HAVE SHARED CULTURAL TRADITIONS THE LEAST OF WHICH CAN BE HEARD IN OUR MUSIC, SUCH AS THE EVER POPULAR “OPA NI NA NEI” AND “DIRLADA DIRLADA DA”. PUTTING POLITICAL DIFFERENCES ASIDE MUSIC IS TRULY THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE AND EQUILIZER WHEN IT COMES TO CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING. IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR SIR RON GOODWIN, THE FILM SCORER OF THE WAR ACTION ADVENTURE THRILLER “THE 633 SQUADRON” WHOSE THEME YOU ARE HEARING IN THE BACKGROUND, THAT ALSO FEATURED A YOUNG GEORGE CHAKIRIS, OF “WEST SIDE STORY” FAME, A FELLOW HELLENE AND PROUD GREEK AMERICAN, ALONG WITH THE LATE GREAT CHARACTER ACTOR CLIFF ROBERSTON. SO HERE THEN IS THE SIR RON GOODWIN ORCHESTRA IN COLLABORATION WITH THE RHABANI BROTHERS PERFORMING MUSIC FROM “ARABIAN NIGHTS” OR AS I COMMONLY CALL IT “LEBANESE POP”. OLDIES BUT GOODIES FROM ZORBA THE MAD GREEK’S MUSICAL LIBRARY COURTESEY OF “OPA FROM GREECE WITH LOVE”.

Tikanes and Yasou Y'all, After this I might be saying Tikanes and who wants to sue me Y'all I had the pleasure of interviewing not too long ago an upcoming comedian/filmmaker...there are plenty of them around...but with a very unique Freudian perspective. Never mind that Freud and he are Jewish, one invented psychiatry the other has been a recipient of that invention as portrayed in a circumspect analysis of the true meaning of manhood, the First Covenant, and why you have it done as a baby and not as an adult. You will soon see, very soon see what I mean. So now here are a few words from Gleb Kaminer...and away we go.............................................. Zorba The Mad Greek

Tikanese and Yasou Y’all! I am back and I hope you had a good Efxharisti’a (Thanksgiving). Well I am thankful for you the fans who are the lifeblood of our show. Without you we wouldn’t be here or should I say we still would but not be as relevant as we are thanks to you. As I promised when I went on my hiatus last week here is the encore presentation of my live interviews from the red carpet of the Academy of Motion Pictures Beverly Hills Headquarters of the premier screening for the Greek Heritage Society of Southern California’s long awaited production of THE PROMISE OF TOMORROW–the continuing saga of the Greek pioneers who paved the way for the fulfillment of the American dream and made it possible for all of us Greek and non-Greek to partake in the prosperity this great land offers to all those who are willing to labor and toil in the cause of liberty, freedom of speech and worship, and the fidelity of entrepreneurship and capital enterprise that are the hallmark today of a civilized and successful society. So here is the interviews from the pre-screening reception with such notables as Nick Patsaouras, former Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate, Patricia Kara, Co-Host of Deal Or No Deal, Eva Maria Leonardou, popular Greek Television Super Star of the dramas I Lampsis and Kalimera Zoi and lets not forget the music composer Bob Luna and his beloved wife the film’s director Anna Giannotis. There are many, many more and you will just have to listen to the entire show to experience this wonderful and historic event that profiles the immigrant experience from a Hellenic perspective. But before we get started here is a synopsis from IMDBPro: “An examination of first and second generation Greek-Americans and the challenges facing them as they become integral parts of the community as a whole, while still maintaining their unique cultural identity.” You may purchase the DVD by visiting their website: Enjoy babies!
